Epilogue

Everyone had advice for Aren in the months following Brad’s departure. They told him to wait, that he’d get over it. It seemed that everyone in town, other than perhaps Aren’s father, had known that Aren and Brad were lovers, and everyone had their opinions on it.

As the months had passed, Aren found he was starting to care less and less about what other people had to say about it. The sharp ache, the sting of betrayal, never faded, and the feelings that he’d developed for Brad had never gone away.

He wanted Brad, he missed Brad, his Professor, his Master, just as much after three months had passed as he did the morning he woke up and the older man was gone. Just utterly gone, the side of the bed that he slept on completely cold, everything neatly packed away. No note. Nothing.

Aren had learned something from Brad, though. Something that he wasn’t sure his former lover wanted him to have learned. He’d learned determination, and focus, traits that Brad had in abundance.

So what would Brad do if he wanted something as much as Aren wanted, needed, Brad? Well, he’d go after it. So that was exactly what Aren did.

Once he got started, one step naturally followed the other. He found himself accepted to NYU with a full scholarship, his grades when he’d graduated high school had been more than good enough to assure that. His mother had even paid for the ticket over to New York, though he wasn’t sure she approved.

It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered but getting back to Brad. Although getting an education, that didn’t break Aren’s heart, either.

He was packing when his mother came in, and the look of sadness on her face broke his heart.

“You’re really going,” she said, and then shook her head. “I haven’t told your father. I won’t until you’re already gone.”

Aren left his clothing and went to her to hug her.

“I’ll be back someday,” he promised. He kissed her weathered cheek. “Thank you for everything, mom. You know I have to do this.”

She smiled at him, though there were tears in her eyes.

“I know. Your heart has been stolen. We’ll be here.”

The very next day, Aren would be leaving Germany for the first time. It was daunting, but more exciting than anything else.

He was going to get his Master back.
